Anca Irinciuc is a Romanian visual artist whose practice centres on drawing, using the blue ballpoint pen to explore tension, psychological boundaries and human presence.
Her work developed through painting, collage and photography, with drawing becoming its main focus in recent years. Her series on the human figure and landscape explore perception, memory and emotional states.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I draw from things I see, both in everyday life and through images encountered online, but the drawing changes them. What begins as observation gradually becomes something more personal.
I draw slowly, one mark at a time, in blue ballpoint. The pen is both my medium and my limit. I can’t erase, so every decision stays on the page. This makes me careful, but the hand still varies in pressure, rhythm and small hesitations. The time a drawing takes stays visible in it.
Figures and landscapes function similarly in my work: not as portraits or specific places, but as ways of holding the emotion of a moment - what is felt between one moment and the next. A gesture, a turned - away gaze or an open field can hold what is difficult to express directly.
I use selective realism, at times pushing certain areas towards hyperrealism while allowing others to remain open. In this tension between what is clearly seen and what is withheld, the image can move beyond its subject.
When it works, the drawing holds more than what I started from. It holds the time, attention and uncertainty that went into making it.
